Abstract quantum information doesn鈥檛 care about the physical system into which it is encoded. Practically, however, there are considerable differences between using matter-based quantum information (e.g. atoms, ions, dots, NV centers, spins, superconducting qubits) versus photons as the physical carriers of the quantum information. I will first overview how photons can be used to efficiently build a robust, fault-tolerant, quantum computer, even though - unlike matter qubits - they do not interact. In the light (!) of these results I will then discuss some interesting features they reveal about photonic entanglement more generally. Finally I will show some of the engineering progress towards building a large-scale photonic quantum computer.
