Dark Sky Tourism

More than 99% of European and North American residents live under light-polluted skies, and for a third of people worldwide the Milky Way is entirely obscured (Falchi et al. 2016).

Research

Dr Backes' research focuses on gamma-ray astronomy of Active Galactic Nuclei with the  and the . Regarding the latter, he is involved in redshift determination with the . Besides that, he is particularly active in the fields of advanced data analysis methods and camera electronics for very high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, and site-testing for future observatories. Further, he works on the establishment and science program of the , and occultation observations of Trans-Neptunian Objects.
