Who I am

I am a professor of physics in the subdepartment of Particle Physics and the John Adams Institute for Acellerator Science.

I am also a tutorial fellow of Balliol College where I teach undergraduate physics students in optics, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, kinetic theory, nuclear physics and particle physics.

Neutrino Physics

I am a member of the SNO+ collaboration with a specific interest in the optical calibration of the detector.

I have a strong interest in technology R&D towards a next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment based on liquid scintillators.
My next big project in this area will be the high-bandwidth optical readout of PMTs.

Optical Interferometry for Acellerator, Telescope and HEP detector alignemnt

Throgh the current PaMIr project I am develloping methods for measuring optical path lengths and displacements based on optical interferometry of various types. These techniques are aimed at applications on large scale telescopes, particle accelerators and high energy physics detectors but we reach these applications ultimately by generating commercially viable instruments that meet these demanding needs. Our industrial partners and then produce our technologies and bring them to the widest possible range of applications.

Research interests

Optical Interferometry for metrology
Neutrino Physics (neutrinoless double beta decay)
Accelerator Physics (alignment and stabilisation)
Enterprise and Innovation in Physics
