Performance of an electromagnetic liquid krypton calorimeter

Abstract:

A prototype electromagnetic calorimeter containing 180 litres of liquid krypton has been tested in electron and muon beams at the CERN SPS. The main features of this detector are its active shower medium, a granularity of 2 cm with tower readout, and the use of the initial current readout technique with an effective shaping time of about 60 ns. An energy resolution for electrons of 4.1% 鈭欵[GeV] with a constant term of 0.4% and a noise contribution of 50 MeV has been achieved. The calorimeter has a spatial resolution of 4.5 mm 鈭欵[GeV] with a constant term of 0.3 mm and a time resolution of about 0.5 ns for energies larger than 10 GeV. 漏 1994.

Abstract:

The D脴 detector is a large general purpose detector for the study of short-distance phenomena in high energy antiproton-proton collisions, now in operation at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The detector focusses upon the detection of electrons, muons, jets and missing transverse momentum. We describe the design and performance of the major elements of the detector, including the tracking chambers, transition radiation detector, liquid argon calorimetry and muon detection. The associated electronics, triggering systems and data acquisition systems are presented. The global mechanical, high voltage, and experiment monitoring and control systems which 91探花 the detector are described. We also discuss the design and implementation of software and software 91探花 systems that are specific to D脴. 漏 1994.
