Abstract:

A search for lepton-flavor-violating interactions ep 鈫 渭X and ep 鈫 蟿X has been performed with the ZEUS detector using the entire HERA I data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 130 pb-1. The data were taken at center-of-mass energies, 鈭歴, of 300 and 318 GeV. No evidence of lepton-flavor violation was found, and constraints were derived on leptoquarks (LQs) that could mediate such interactions. For LQ masses below 鈭歴, limits were set on 位eq1 鈭毼 鈩搎, where 位eq1 is the coupling of the LQ to an electron and a first-generation quark q1, and 尾鈩搎 is the branching ratio of the LQ to the final-state lepton 鈩 (渭 or 蟿) and a quark q. For LQ masses much larger than 鈭歴, limits were set on the four-fermion interaction term 位eq伪位 鈩搎尾/MLQ2 for LQs that couple to an electron and a quark qalpha and to a lepton 鈩 and a quark q beta, where 伪 and 尾 are quark generation indices. Some of the limits are also applicable to lepton-flavor-violating processes mediated by squarks in R-Parity-violating supersymmetric models. In some cases, especially when a higher-generation quark is involved and for the process ep 鈫 蟿X, the ZEUS limits are the most stringent to date. 漏 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract:

Multijet production rates in neutral current deep inelastic scattering have been measured in the range of exchanged boson virtualities 10 < Q 2 < 5000 GeV2. The data were taken at the ep collider HERA with centre-of-mass energy 鈭歴 = 318 GeV using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 82.2pb-1. Jets were identified in the Breit frame using the kT cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of differential dijet and trijet cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse energy (ET,Bjet), pseudorapidity (畏LAB jet) and Q2 with ET,Bjet > 5 GeV and -1 < 畏LABjet < 2.5. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations describe the data well. The value of the strong coupling constant 伪s(MZ), determined from the ratio of the trijet to dijet cross sections, is 伪s(MZ) = 0.1179 卤 0.0013 (stat.)-0.0046-0.0028 (exp.) -0.0046+0.0064 (th.). 漏 Springer-Verlag / Societ脿 Italiana di Fisica 2005.

Abstract:

The ZEUS inclusive differential cross-section data from HERA, for charged and neutral current processes taken with e + and e - beams, together with differential cross-section data on inclusive jet production in e + p scattering and dijet production in 纬p scattering, have been used in a new NLO QCD analysis to extract the parton distribution functions of the proton. The input of jet-production data constrains the gluon and allows an accurate extraction of alpha s(MZ) at NLO; alphas = 0.1183卤0.0028(exp.)卤0.0008(model). An additional uncertainty from the choice of scales is estimated as 卤0.005. This is the first extraction of alphas(MZ) from HERA data alone. 漏 Springer-Verlag/Societ脿 Italiana de Fisica 2005.

Abstract:

Deep inelastic scattering and its diffractive component, ep 鈫 e鈥 纬* p 鈫 e鈥 X N, have been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 4.2 pb-1. The measurement covers a wide range in the 纬* p c.m. energy W (37-245 GeV), photon virtuality Q2 (2.2-80 GeV2) and mass MX (0.28-35 GeV). The diffractive cross section for MX > 2 GeV rises strongly with W; the rise is steeper with increasing Q2. The latter observation excludes the description of diffractive deep inelastic scattering in terms of the exchange of a single pomeron. The ratio of diffractive to total cross section is constant as a function of W, in contradiction to the expectation of Regge phenomenology combined with a naive extension of the optical theorem to 纬* p scattering. Above MX of 8 GeV, the ratio is flat with Q2, indicating a leading-twist behaviour of the diffractive cross section. The data are also presented in terms of the diffractive structure function, F2D(3)(尾, x鈩, Q2), of the proton. For fixed 尾, the Q2 dependence of x鈩F2 D(3) changes with x鈩 in violation of Regge factorisation. For fixed x鈩, x鈩 F2D(3) rises as 尾 鈫 0, the rise accelerating with increasing Q2. These positive scaling violations suggest substantial contributions of perturbative effects in the diffractive DIS cross section. 漏 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
